The adjunct mood stabilizer that I was on, Lamictal, apparently caused my body to initiate a Lupus like anti-immune response against itself. Basically, I got a rash, mouth sores, and high liver toxicity. It is too bad because I felt better on the Lamictal than any other medication that I have ever been on.
Now I am on a low dose antipsychotic, which I guess offically makes me a nut job. I feel pretty good though. The antipsychotic is in line with standard treatment practices for bipolar disorder. If a patient is on a mood stabilizer and an anti-depressant and is still not stable the next recommended course of action is to try a antipsychotic, at least with people presenting symptoms like mine.
